Morning Coffee – 06/13/14

Here are the stories I put in my coffee this morning.

  • Upon This Rock
  • To paraphrase Jesus’ words, the Lord told Peter, “I say to you that you are a small stone, and upon this bedrock I will build My church.” It was a play on words that made a significant spiritual point.

  • A Passion for Preaching: An Interview with Steven J. Lawson
  • As the pulpit goes, so goes the church. The deeper the preacher takes his flock into the Word of God, the higher they will rise in worship. The stronger they are in the Scripture, the stronger they will be in the pursuit of holiness.

  • When Sin Looks Delicious
  • Do you ever have those days where you just want to sin? Sin looks delicious while righteousness looks distasteful. Sin looks satisfying and holiness looks frustrating. You wake up in the morning with a desire to do what you know you should not desire to do.—What do you do on a day like that?

  • How to Overcome Sin
  • Yes, we are given the Holy Spirit who conforms us into the image of Christ. But our old nature, our built-in-at-conception sinful nature still lives within us. So what do we do with these sins? How can we overcome our sin?

  • The Difficulties Of Being Honest About Our Sin
  • Despite the somewhat recent host of preachers and teachers suggesting that the gospel frees us to be responsibly transparent about our sin, I still wonder how free some people have actually become.

Morning Coffee – 02/27/14

Here are the stories I put in my coffee this morning.

  • Whitefield’s Sin Exposing Spotlight
  • He implored them, “You are lost, undone, without Him; and if He is not glorified in your salvation, He will be glorified in your destruction; if He does not come and make His abode in your hearts, you must take up an eternal abode with the devil and his angels.” None who heard Whitefield were put to sleep with a false sense of security.

  • We All Ban (sort of) Books
  • I truly do not have the power to ban books. I can warn people that certain books are filled with error and will lead them into those same errors. I can warn that some books are divisive because of their doctrinal error. But I cannot actually ban books. Although I must say that the power to do so seems rather tempting.

  • Five Truths About the Resurrection of Jesus
  • The resurrection is an already but not-yet reality for the Christian because of our union with Christ. Jesus’s resurrection means that those who have faith in him have been raised from the dead because they are in Christ, and yet we still await the full experience of the resurrection to come (Romans 8:22–23).

  • What Does “Give Us this Day Our Daily Bread” Mean?
  • We have a tendency to pray in general. When we pray in general, the only way we will see the hand of God’s providence is in general. As we enter into prayer, this conversation and communion with God, and put our petitions before Him, pouring out our souls and our needs specifically, we see specific answers to our prayers.

Morning Coffee

Here are the stories I put in my coffee this morning.

  • The Beauty of ‘Boring’ Testimonies
  • Every Christian has a redemption story. Whether you are saved from cocaine addiction or a prideful heart, from deep in a prison cell or the comfort of your suburban home, your story is filled with grace.

  • The Power to Persevere
  • We are like the man who was pushing his car up a hill only to discover he merely needed to turn the key and ignite the powerful engine. How much better it is to turn on the power and enjoy the ride. So it is in the Christian life.

  • Great is Thy Faithfulness, Lord unto… Thyself
  • This is God’s covenant faithfulness. His faithfulness to Himself is the basis of His faithfulness to His people. And may that reality delightfully compel your faithfulness to Him as you walk by faith in Christ Jesus.

  • Falling on Deaf Ears? — Why So Many Churches Hear So Little of the Bible
  • “It is well and good for the preacher to base his sermon on the Bible, but he better get to something relevant pretty quickly, or we start mentally to check out.” That stunningly clear sentence reflects one of the most amazing, tragic, and lamentable characteristics of contemporary Christianity: an impatience with the Word of God.

Morning Coffee

Here are the stories I put in my coffee this morning.

  • 5 Tips for Finding Your Theological Balance
  • Martin Luther described the history of theology as a drunk man getting on his horse only to fall off the other side—and then repeating the process. This problem irks me.

  • Theological Primer: Supralapsarianism and Infralapsarianism
  • I’m not aware of any two words in the theological lexicon quite like supralapsarianism and infralapsarianism. They sound dreadfully esoteric and hopelessly elitist, like they might be concerned with how many angels can dance on the head of a pin if that pin were resting upon a rock which God made so heavy not even he could lift it.

  • Are You Seeking After God?
  • The unbeliever will not seek. The unbeliever will not knock. Seeking is the business of believers. Jonathan Edwards said, “The seeking of the Kingdom of God is the chief business of the Christian life.” Seeking is the result of faith, not the cause of it.
